Navigation Courses for Women
Here's what we’ll typically cover on a Beginner Navigation Course for Women:
This event is aimed at absolute beginners, less than absolute beginners in fact. If you say YES or NO to any of the below, then do consider booking this course to give you some freedom out on the Fells. • Can you navigate yourself out of the car park without needing a sneaky look at your GPS to find a path? • Can you find North on your Map? But more importantly can you then align this with North on your compass to ensure that you are holding your map the right way round? Do you even know why you need to know where North is? • Do you know the difference between various types of paths whether they are green dots or black dots or anything for that matter? • Ever been caught with out with the sun going down and started to panic as you don’t want to get caught in the dark in case you can’t then find your way back? • Worse still, ever started to panic when the battery on your phone is starting to die and you need it to cross check your location? You’ll be part of a small group of walking women to ensure personalised learning. Be prepared to walk up to 7km with around 380m ascent and descent so that you can use all your new skills whilst learning them on the ground. We will cover: • Getting to know your walking pace and timing – learn lots of hints and tips throughout the day. • How to read your map – getting familiar with symbols, scales, and understanding how important these features are when navigating. • Techniques to plan routes – tailored to your ability. • How to find north on your map and compass and how then to apply this to your map correctly. • Orientating your map to your surroundings. • Navigating with your compass to ensure you are always going in the right direction. • Using apps – getting the most out of map and weather apps. Rough itinerary: 9.30-10.30 – Essential learning on low-level ground 10.30-3.30 – Learning up on the hills 3.30-4.30 – Return to low level ground for some final learning points and maybe even round our day off with cake and coffee in a local cafe. Minimum 3 people must be booked for this event to go ahead. There will be no more than 8 in the group to ensure personalised learning. For further info, have a read of the T&Cs and FAQs. Following this course, you may wish to book onto an Advanced Navigation Course to further your outdoor skills!

• Kitting up and dressing correctly – get to understand the huge variety of kit that’s available, including layering and Gore-Tex, and ensuring that your rucksack is sized correctly. This essential knowledge will make the difference between enjoying a great day out or coming home rather wet and cold and maybe even with sore shoulders and back. • Movement on the Hills – how to move and manage steep ground with careful stepping techniques. We also discuss the very valuable use of poles so as to preserve you knees for a long time to come and keep you balanced. • Understanding the weather – understanding how to assess the weather forecast and interpret it to help you plan your day and stay safe. • Planning a walk – helping you get to know your walking pace and predict how long it will take to complete your walk of choice. • Basic navigation – we will go through the ‘essentials’ that you need to get out on the hills initially. You’ll be able to understand what’s on your map, find north on your compass, and use this to orientate your map. We’ll also touch on GPS navigation and the role this plays in keeping you safe. • Hazards and emergency procedures – how to stay safe by assessing mountain risks and hazards, and what to do in an emergency.
