Sonia's Story...

Sonia laced her boots up and swung on her backpack. She hurried out to meet her guided walking group and tackle the magnificent Helvellyn. A lone female, she was feeling a little nervous but she was determined to get out and do what she’d wanted for so long. Cautiously, Sonia approached the large group of people and noticed that she was one of the only women and also likely the oldest in the group. Undeterred, she set off after the guide, filling her lungs with fresh air and feeling the sun warm her face. She gazed at the mountains around her, beaming up at them. As the group began the ascent Sonia quickly realised that she didn’t quite have the same ability or pace as the rest. Others raced ahead and Sonia found herself at the back, walking alone. She didn’t want to lose the herd so she pushed herself to walk faster, anxiety setting in. Eventually, she reached the summit and was in awe of the landscape around her. She got out her camera to take a few pictures. She wanted to stay longer and take it all in but she was feeling pressure from the group to push on. They all began the descent and Sonia resumed her position – right at the back. As the sky clouded over, she reflected on her feelings on the way down. She was proud of what she’d accomplished but she was exhausted, alone, and unsatisfied.

Had the most awesome guided walk from Nicola today. She gauged our abilities and considered the weather and I had a dream day climbing Pavey Arc, Harrison Stickle and Thunacar Knott's. She gave us breaks and explained the terrain and any challenges. She explained which fells were which and taught us some simple navigation techniques. She is an amazing guide.

Such a fantastic day on Nicola’s beginner navigation course.  For someone who walks in the Lakes as much as I do, I’m ashamed to say I didn’t really know how to use a map and compass. I just relied on whoever I was walking with or my ‘instinct’ which has led me to get lost on numerous occasions! Nicola has managed to change this with her super helpful hints and tips on navigation and I’m chuffed to say I’m finally beginning to understand the basics. Nicola was so friendly, with an easy, relaxed teaching style, making it a pleasurable experience. We had plenty of laughs along the way and I would highly recommend her. Thank you.

Absolutely amazing day out learning navigation. Nicola had so many handy hints and tips to make life easier while trying to juggle a map and compass! I’ve done navigation days before but never quite got to grips with a compass. I found Nicola’s teaching style absolutely perfect for me and for the first time ever I really felt I understood! Lots of reassurance and absolutely no pressure, Nicola was happy to explain things as many times as we needed. Lots of laughs along the way and coffee and banana bread in Grasmere, while we discussed maps with the ladies, was a perfect end to the day.
